Saint Malo is the first Breton city in terms of touristic flow. The attraction power of this very independent city is not ready to run out. The city fascinates and invites to remote horizons.

Fortified
City so to tackle the Norman invasions, Saint Malo chooses seclusion
and counts only on itself to develop. Moreover the currency of its
inhabitants is particularly eloquent: "Inhabitant of Saint Malo first
and above all, Breton…maybe, French in the last resort". The period
from 1590 to 1594 is also interesting because at that era, Saint Malo
was an independent republic! Harbour free zone under Charles 6, it is
thanks to the sea, that this city managed to live, haggle and thrive
to
the point of becoming the first harbour of France in the 17th century.
It is during that time, that Vauban builds the last fortifications and
that the private mansions make their appearance to concretize this
success. Opened to the world, Saint Malo traded with “Terre Neuve” and
obtained the monopoly of the trade with the Indies under Louis 14. The
city is 80% destroyed during its liberation in August 1944. All the
population engaged then in the rebuilding to preserve the spirit and
the charm of this city. Not strange that this environment was
favourable to give birth to vocations in the hearts of certain Surcouf,
Duguay Trouin, Jacques Cartier...etc.
