The city of Rennes has two faces. In the one hand, the post fire architecture characterized by imposing buildings and broad streets (article "monuments of Rennes"). In the other hand, the "old" Rennes either spared from the flames or rebuilt in identical form and illustrated by narrow streets with wood sided houses.

The
district around the cathedral (place des lices, la Monnaie street...)
was spared from the fire of 1720 and has thus preserved its ancient
charm. The Strolls in its lanes are highly pleasant since the
circulation is difficult even prohibited. In other words, pedestrians
are kings! The amateurs of medieval architecture will be delighted.
Especially if they go through la Monnaie street, saint sauveur street,
vasselot street and saint Michel street (by day)... This short
itinerary will

lead you to “place des lices” which is characterized by
its markets especially the Saturday morning market which is definitely
worth visiting because of its size and its particular atmosphere.
Lastly, the visitor can go for shopping in the various stores of these
streets, eat or have a drink. Moreover, the Saint Michel Street is also
known as "street of thirst". Indeed, this street is composed of bars
only!
PS : The area might be badly attended the evening. To avoid for family strolls.
