Morlaix is located at the crossroads of Léon in the west, of Trégor in the east, the sea in the north and les monts d’Arrée in the south. It is the third city of Finistère which preserves its former prosperity.

Morlaix
was always rich thanks to its geographical position. Morlaix was
already a road crossroads during the Roman era and was one of the first
invested sites by the Breton driven out the British Isles. It is only
since 1179, under the reign of the Duke of Brittany, that Morlaix
started its true rise. At that time, the site is already important
thanks to its castle and its three priories (Saint Mathieu, Saint
Melaine and Saint Martin). Fishing, flax and the port ensure the
prosperity of

the city. Every one says in Morlaix: "if they bite you,
bite them!". This sentence comes from an anecdote. In 1522, the English
attacked the city while the majority of the population was in fairs of
the area. The evening, when they celebrated their victory, the
“morlaisiens” massacred them. Another great resource of the city, since
1740, will be the tobacco factory which manufactured several hundreds
of million cigars and tons of chewing tobacco. Today closed, the city
seeks its re-conversion to thrive in the third millennium. Tourism
would be a good choice since the city has a rich patrimony. If you are
in Morlaix, don’t miss “les maisons à pondalez”, make the venelles
circuit, the museum of Morlaix.
PS : Office of tourism: Place des otages, under the viaduct in the centre. Phone. 02 98 62 14 94.
