Dinan History - Rues médiévales The history of Dinan goes up to 850 AC when Nominoë, first Breton king, drives out on la Rance banks the Irish monks. He later agrees to help them when they show him the body of Saint Magloire they conceal before so to gain the mercy of the king. The first lords appear in the year 1000 AC and build a castle which will be conquered by William the Conqueror. Dinan History - Vieille ville a first golden age thanks to craftsmen and tradesmen who will ensure its prosperity until the war of succession over the throne of Brittany. This prosperity was envied by the British who launched repeated attacks on the city whose troops were commanded by Du Guesclin. Moreover in 1357, the British proposed a duel between Du Guesclin and Thomas of Canterbury so to decide of the fate of the battle. Du Guesclin gained this combat and by the same the heart of his future wife Tiphaine Raguenel. Following these events, Dinan undergoes the war of succession over the throne of Brittany until 1488 when it ends by opening its doors to the French. The period of peace which followed, enabled Dinan to become prosperous once again and to extend a certain economic and political influence over Brittany by receiving several times the States of Brittany. |
