et Vilaine is a dynamic department which frequently sees its population
growing. Located at the east of Brittany, it borders “la Manche”,
“Mayenne”, “Maine et Loire”, “la Loire Atlantique”, “Côtes d’Armor” and
“Morbihan”. |
Its main geographical characteristics are: _ A population of approximately 900 000 inhabitants _ A surface of 6995 km2 _ A climax of 258 meters in the Paimpont forest. _ the prefecture is Rennes and its sub-prefectures are Fougères, Redon and Saint Malo. _ Lastly, it counts a total of 352 communes. The history of “La Bretagne” and the pre-mentioned department are related. Its first occupants came from Iberia towards 2000 B.C, the Gallics which founded Condate (Rennes), the Bretons chassed |
from the British Islands and the francs which capitulated to the kings of Brittany. The marriage of Anne of Brittany achieved the independence. Rennes became a significant administrative centre at the image of the Parliament. During the revolution period, the city became the theatre of confrontations between the republicans and the chouans.
