| Rennes
is a beautiful example of conciliation between modern and past. From
the one hand, a city with a strong identity attached to its roots. And
from the other hand, a dynamic city opened to the world and cradle of
new technologies. |
The Contemporary Rennes - L'esplanade de la gare Rennes holds in its heart some old monuments from the past and beautiful examples of modern architecture. Among these buildings, there is “la cité judiciaire” (the judiciary city), kind of glass mushroom. The railway station was remade at the beginning of the Nineties. However, its esplanade is very recent built in 2002 at the time of the arrival of the subway which precisely stops at the station. This said, the subway illustrates best the modernity of Rennes. The “Val” (light automatic |
The Contemporary Rennes - Le val vehicle) has only one line which crosses the city from north to south in about fifteen minutes. It is entirely automated, just like that of Lille or Toulouse. It is important to note that many were sceptics about its utility and its frequentation. Let’s have in mind that Rennes is the smallest city in the world to have its subway. Consequently, the subway was a total success and the “Val” is totally integrated in the daily life of the people of Rennes. A second line which would cross the city from east to west might be opened soon. Lastly, the pole Rennes Atalante is a synergy of dynamic SME in the field of telecommunications and data processing. Located close to the Rennes Beaulieu University, it is a cradle of creativity and technicality.
