In th heart of Vitré - Rue d'en Bas All started when the little son of the count of Rennes chose Vitré as a city of residence in 1060 since the site was easy to fortify. Protected by this fortress, the agglomeration develops so well magnifying thus the power of the lord of Vitré. Then, attached to the seigniory of Laval by a marriage, the lords Laval-Vitré find themselves close by blood to the great Breton and French families. In th heart of Vitré - Maison en colombage of Vitré started in the 11th century and kept being strengthened until the 15th century. Thus, various architectural forms mingle in the castle. The oldest vestiges are of Romanesque art and the others, rather neo-gothic. In addition, some traces of the early Renaissance are still visible. One of the towers hosts the “château” museum where history of the city, architectures and curiosities of science of life mix in great harmony. In the old city, downwards the castle, you can admire the old residences which will take you seven centuries backwards. The most significant streets are “la rue d’en bas” and “la rue de la Baudrairie” where each house is worth the glance. Lastly, to achieve the visit of Vitré, take a look at the glowing “Notre Dame” church of Gothic style and dating from the 15th century. |
