Fougeres - Forteresse

A city which should be piously visited by the painters" Victor Hugo Fougeres divides into two: the first part, historical illustrated by its castle. The second part, modern which includes the current city. Between past and present, Fougeres constitutes a stage of choice.

Economically
speaking, the name of Fougères remains related to the shoe industry.
According to Victor Hugo, it forms a spoon between the castle and the
city. A strategic position on the one hand, and a town of trade and
industry on the other hand. In the origin, the mission of the fortress
of Fougères built in 1020 was to defend the Breton borders. However,
between the 12th and the 15th century it fell in the hands of the
English then seized by the kings before being yielded to the Dukes

of
Brittany. Finally, through the attacks, the fortress yielded making of
the castle the last defence bastion. The Fougères castle is the first
monument of the city. Component built around the 12th to the 15th
century, it comprises of no less than 13 towers for an enclosure that
covers 2 hectares. Then, it was modified during centuries so to resist
the new artillery weapons requiring a defence organisation increasingly
effective. It is visited throughout the year, except in January. The
Saint Sulpice church is downwards the castle. It is the other monument
of Fougères. It replaces another building due to be transformed into
Gothic church. Indeed, the chorus in itself was built between 1545 and
1760 A.C. Do not hesitate to go for a walk in the " bourg vieil " at
the edge of the castle which is the oldest and the most animated
district.
PS : There is a permit which gives access to all the monuments of the city.
