Combourg is the city where Chateaubriand spent his youth. And just like Saint Malo, Combourg remains very proud of this illustrious character which lived in the Combourg castle.

Combourg
is a typical charming city of High Bretagne (Brittany). During your
ballades in this village, you will feel a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
In Albert Parent square, you will be able to contemplate one of the
oldest residences of Combourg town centre named "la maison de la
lanterne" and actual seat of the tourism office. Furthermore, the
castle is the principal monument of this small city of character.
Moreover, the history of the city is closely related to that of its
castle.
Combourg - Maison des fées
Combourg - Maison des fées
Initially built in the 11th century by Ginguené, the archbishop
of Dol, in order to defend his stronghold. It fell then in the hands of
the Dukes of Bretagne (Brittany) and became the place of residence of
several great families. In 1761, a rich ship-owner of Saint Malo
repurchases the castle where he installs his family. This ship-owner is
the father of Chateaubriand and his son is then eight years old. These
places will haunt the little François Rene and will inspire him for his
work: "It is in the wood of Combourg that I became what I am". Moreover
its memories of Combourg are among the most romantic pages of “Mémoires
d’outre-tombe”. The current buildings date from the 15th century with a
restoration going back to 1875 to which it was added a landscaped
garden.
PS : The wood mentioned by Chateaubriand seems to be the Mesnil forest around Combourg in which stand a megalithic monument: « la maison des fées »
