Redon - Saint Sauveur
Redon - Saint Sauveur

Redon owes its situation as a terrestrial and maritime crossroads to its geographical location. Indeed, it is a frontier town of the following departments: Ille et Vilaine, Loire Atlantique and the Morbihan. Moreover, it is located at the Oust confluence, of la Vilaine and from the channel of Nantes to Brest.

It
is this situation which interested the first occupants of Redon such as
the Irish monks in the 9th century.
Moreover, in 832, a relative of Nominoë (Breton king) established a
religious community. It will be a turning point in the political and
economic history of the city since its history is closely related to
religion and to the flows of pilgrims. Indeed, the famous Benedictine
abbey of “Saint Sauveur” (Saint Saver) becomes the most significant of
Brittany in the middle age. This
abbey confers to Redon in a very short
time an administrative and religious importance to the point that Redon
profits from numerous privileges granted by the Dukes of Brittany.
Moreover, being a significant sanctuary on the road of Saint Jacques de
Compostelle with a significant flow of pilgrims conferred a certain
commercial prosperity to the city. For the anecdote, the cartulary of
Redon, which is a very significant document composed of acts remains
one of the few last traces of the medieval Brittany. Thereafter Redon
owed its prosperity thanks to the fluvial trade and its shipyards.
Thereafter, many companies settled in the city in order to benefit from
the pre-mentioned strategic position. However, the city manage to
preserve its authenticity through numerous traces of its past. Thus,
one stroll along the channel and in the heart of the old city remains
full of charm and relaxation.
PS : Les visites de la cathédrale Saint-Sauveur sont limitées. Pensez à vous renseigner auprès de l’office de tourisme.
