Place full of mystery, and impregnated with popular legends, the Saint-Michel Mount was a place of inspiration for a great number of writers, in particular those of the XIXth century which made of the Mount a high place of romanticism.

Nowadays,
the tourist flows which flood the mount make of it the most visited
place of France after the Eiffel Tower. Since 1979, the site composed
of the Saint- Michel Mount and of its bay is among the universal
natural and cultural inheritance of the UNESCO. According to the
legend, the archangel Saint Michel appeared to the bishop of Avranches,
Aubert, and ordered the construction of an oratory on the Tombe mount
at the beginning of the 8th century. Saint Michel who would have
beaten
Satan (at the Dol mount) is venerated by this building to the point
that the Saint Michel mount became one of the greatest centres of
Christian pilgrimage during the Middle Ages. Inhabited at the beginning
by a handle of monks, the site gained importance and saw the
construction of new accommodations so to host other monks and other
pilgrims. Under the reign of Philippe August, thanks to many donators,
the construction of the new buildings is such a success that the mount
is baptized "the wonder". The era from the 16th to the 19th century was
a period of decline that left the mount without maintenance and then
transformed into prison. Under the impulse of intellectuals (such as
Victor Hugo) the site is delegated to the Historical buildings in 1873.
Lastly, in 1969, a community of monks brought to life the first
vocation of the site.
