Malo is the first Breton city in terms of touristic flow. The
attraction power of this very independent city is not ready to run out.
The city fascinates and invites to remote horizons. |
History of Saint Malo - Hotel particulier de l'âge d'or Fortified City so to tackle the Norman invasions, Saint Malo chooses seclusion and counts only on itself to develop. Moreover the currency of its inhabitants is particularly eloquent: "Inhabitant of Saint Malo first and above all, Breton…maybe, French in the last resort". The period from 1590 to 1594 is also interesting because at that era, Saint Malo was an independent republic! Harbour free zone under Charles 6, it is thanks to the sea, that this city managed to live, haggle and thrive |
to the point of becoming the first harbour of France in the 17th century. It is during that time, that Vauban builds the last fortifications and that the private mansions make their appearance to concretize this success. Opened to the world, Saint Malo traded with “Terre Neuve” and obtained the monopoly of the trade with the Indies under Louis 14. The city is 80% destroyed during its liberation in August 1944. All the population engaged then in the rebuilding to preserve the spirit and the charm of this city. Not strange that this environment was favourable to give birth to vocations in the hearts of certain Surcouf, Duguay Trouin, Jacques Cartier...etc. |
