| Few
cities can pride of being the cradle of great men whose image is
inseparable from the city. Among these great characters we can find the
values of independence and exploration of their city used to build
those destinies of dreams. |
Jacques
Cartier (1491-1557), on the support of “Jean Le Veneur” the bishop of
Saint Malo, François 1st names him to lead an expedition to North
America in 1534. He will be the first explorer of the SAINT LAURENT
gulf and its river. He remains in the history as the pioneer of Canada.
Duguay Trouin (1673-1736) and Surcouf (1773-1827) are two notorious
corsairs who contributed to the wealth of their birthplace. Surcouf
used to harass the English ships in India and once wealthy, he returned
to Saint Malo at the age of 35. About the great men of Saint Malo, how
not to speak about its cherished child who shared with his city a great
and reciprocal love... Chateaubriant (1768-1848) did not cease claming
his attachment to his roots in his book "les mémoires d’outre tombe".
The writer, politician and traveller, is buried on the small island of
“grand Bé” vis-à-vis the ramparts. Despite the bombs and the fires of
August 1944, neither his native house nor his tomb were touched! |
