Dinan, ancient feudal city, lives out of time. It managed to keep its medieval charm by its fortification vestiges or the many subsisting wood-side houses. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful Breton cities.

The
history of Dinan goes up to 850 AC when Nominoë, first Breton king,
drives out on la Rance banks the Irish monks. He later agrees to help
them when they show him the body of Saint Magloire they conceal before
so to gain the mercy of the king. The first lords appear in the year
1000 AC and build a castle which will be conquered by William the
Conqueror. It is only in the 13th century that the city will fall in
the control of the Duke of Brittany. Consequently, the city will know

a
first golden age thanks to craftsmen and tradesmen who will ensure its
prosperity until the war of succession over the throne of Brittany.
This prosperity was envied by the British who launched repeated attacks
on the city whose troops were commanded by Du Guesclin. Moreover in
1357, the British proposed a duel between Du Guesclin and Thomas of
Canterbury so to decide of the fate of the battle. Du Guesclin gained
this combat and by the same the heart of his future wife Tiphaine
Raguenel. Following these events, Dinan undergoes the war of succession
over the throne of Brittany until 1488 when it ends by opening its
doors to the French. The period of peace which followed, enabled Dinan
to become prosperous once again and to extend a certain economic and
political influence over Brittany by receiving several times the States
of Brittany.
