There are many churches and cathedrals to visit in Rennes, here are some examples.
Churches and Cathedrals - Eglise ste Anne
Churches and Cathedrals - Eglise ste Anne
The
St Sauveur basilica: Located close to la Monnaie Street, this basilica
was built between 1703 and 1728. It survived the huge fire of 1720. It
shelters the statue of Notre dame des miracles which would have saved
Rennes from the invasion of the English Army during the 100 years war.
Indeed, according to the legend, a pilgrim would have noticed that this
statue pointed the finger towards the ground. Alerted by this strange
fact, the population dug and discovered numerous galleries where
the
English soldiers hid so to prepare their attack. The Saint Pierre
Cathedral: At the end of la Monnaie Street, this cathedral was built on
the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman temple. The frontage from which work
began around 1560 took a century before being achieved. The visitor
will notice a sun on its summit due to the will of Louis 14 in order to
symbolize his power and to sit his authority on the Breton people. Take
note: the presence of a splendid altar-piece in the nave. The Saint
Germain Church: The Saint Germain Church built in 1545 had to reflect
the power of the “merciers”. It is of a traditional style with Gothic
bases. It shelters the tomb of Bertrand d' Argentré author of the «
Coutume bretonne ». Not to miss, the Notre dame church in Saint
Melaine, the Sainte Anne church and the Saint Aubin church so to
complete your tour.
