Roscoff is located on a peninsula at the western point of the bay of Morlaix. It guards the entry of the English Channel and marks the northern limit of Leon. Face to the sea, Roscoff owes its prosperity to its port.

The
port of Roscoff always had privileged ties with England. This is why
the city has a certain English charm which exists nowhere else on the
coast. The relation ship between the port of Roscoff and the English
coasts is still present today by the connection between Roscoff and
England (the founder of “Britanny Ferries” is from the surroundings).
However, even if the history of the port of Roscoff is closely
dependent of England, the relations knew various crises throughout
history.

Indeed, Roscoff being a Gathering point Of Corsairs, the

marry the dauphin, the inheritor of the throne of Scotland took refuge
in the port in the 18th century. Roscoff was the first smuggling port
of the English Channel. Roscoff exported tea, brandy and especially
pink onion which had greatest success. The hawkers who attached onions
to their bicycles were called "Johnnies" by the English housewives. At
the present time, a second deep water port was set up in Roscoff to
continue to trade with the British Isles and to keep intact the
picturesque charm of the city and of the first port. Roscoff is also
known to be one of the first thalassotherapy centres thanks to its soft
climate.
