Island, with a shape that evokes a crab grip, presents marine
landscapes of a rare beauty which change through seasons. Their wild
character allured numerous artists. |
The Island of Ouessant - the shearing of the sheep The island of jagged coasts has 32 km of linear coastal that can be discovered on foot. The Island shelters close-cropped vegetation and shrubs tortured by the winds; some trees thrive in the sheltered small valley of Arland. The softness of the climate favours the flowering of the camellias, fuchsias and sisal plants in the gardens. The protected site shelters the Ornithological Observation Centre which accommodates researchers from all Europe. The traditions of “Ouessant” |
The Island of Ouessant - Rocks are particular: formerly, men used to engage in the navy and women had to organize their survival on an island of tiny and fragmented pieces. Women farmer and women construction workers, they cultivated rye and barley, raised horses, cows and sheeps, repaired paths, roofs and stone walls. The memory of men disappeared in the sea was honoured by the rite of proëlla and its wax crosses. In Ouessant, the sheep livestock was raised in the open air and protected from the wind behind the goaskedou, curious triangular stone constructions. The lighthouses are an integral part of the surrounding landscape and the environment of the island. They mark out the Ouessant rail; one of the world's most controlled and supervised areas. The lighthouse of Stiff was brought into service in 1700, the Créac' H lighthouse remains one of the world's most powerful. Do not forget to visit to the house of Niou, first French Eco-museum installed in two traditional houses, as well as the Interpretation Centre of “Phares et Balises”, which recalls the history of the maritime signals from Antiquity to nowadays. Walking around the island requires several days, one day on bicycle through the interior paths and roads. In one day, the visit of the island by taxi gives a general highlight and the remainder of time can be dedicated to walks... |
