ports of the end of the world. Within 4 kilometres is the impressing
site of la pointe Saint Mathieu and its Plougonvelin commune. |
 La pointe Saint Mathieu (the Saint-Mathieu headland) - Le phare
is a tourist commune of approximately 2000 inhabitants. The history of
this city is completely dependent on the history of its port which
constitutes a vital activity. Moreover, until the revolution and after
having been under the power of the English and the French, this small
port thrived to the point of competing and even preceding Brest!
Plougonvelin is the last commune to the extreme limit of the continent;
it shelters a remarkable natural site incarnated by the point |
of
Saint-Mathieu. As far as the city’s history is concerned, a local
legend reigns. Indeed, merchants from Leon returned back from Ethiopia
with the body of the apostle of Christ. They were miraculously saved
from a shipwreck off the Saint-Mathieu point (which explains the origin
of its name). A monastery will be built there in the 6th century to
shelter the Saint’s relics. The beauty and the location of this abbey
make of it a unique and very spiritual place. It is located just next
to the lighthouse. |
