| Le
Finistère carries well its name, since it is located at the extreme
west of Europe in other words: "the end of lands". Its name in Breton
dialect expresses the same idea. Indeed, "penn ar bed" means "at the
beginning of the world". |
_The population of the department is approximately 850 000 inhabitants in 1999. _The surface is 6 733 kms2 (25% of Brittany). _The density is of 122 inhabitants in km2. _The length of the coasts extends to 1100 kilometres (the longest shore of France). _The department divides in two parts, l’ar mor and l’argoat (country of woods). _The prefecture is Quimper (60 000 inhabitants) On the economic level, le Finistère benefits from its geographical situation and its maritime opening. |
The Finistère coasts allow agriculture activities, fishing, shipyards and tourism. Moreover, the wide surface of the natural reserves and the exceptional sites that shelter the department constitute another wealth propitious to the development of the department.
