 MEGALITHS CARNAC - Alignements de Carnac
Megaliths were erected during the neolithic period which lasted from
4500 BC until 2000 BC.
The two main structures of the megalithic architecture are "Menhirs"
and "Dolmens" and "Tumulus".
Dolmens and Tumulus were burial structures, they were either collective
or individual tumbs.
Menhirs: an army of stones
There are approximately 3000 menhirs in the Carnac area. The alignments
probably had a cultural role and were a place of worship.
PROTECTION MEASURES Trampling visitors became |
a danger to the
Megaliths. The Alignments have been fenced up to help vegetation
growth, to stabilise the stones. However, access to the Megaliths is
allowed in winter (november to march).

PREHISTORY MUSEUM J.MILN - Z. LE ROUZIC.
The Museum holds the world's largest collection phehistory exhibits,
displaying over 6 600 objects coming from over 136 archeological sites.
On display: plans, maps, audiovisual montages, exhibits : jewellery and
daily life objects ranging from a mere fragment to the extraordinary
polished jade ax.
The different prehistory periods ranging from the paleolithic to the
neolithic (megaliths period), are represented in the Museum.
Also represented, the protohistoric and gallo-roman periods. A very
important place is given to the Megaliths period.
A scheme has been created for children aged 8 to 12 years."Neo",
cartoon character, guides children on an entertaining and educational
tour of the Museum.

MEGALITHIC SITES
ALIGNMENTS : alignments are parallel rows of standing stones. There are
three main fields of alignments in Carnac.

Cairn : heaps of stones surrounding one or several tumbs
Cromlech: circle of standing stones
Dolmen: megalithic burial monument constructed with large stone slabs.
Enceinte: standing stones forming either a circle or a quadrilateral area
Menhir: erected stone, either isolated or in alignments
Neolithic: prehistoric period from 6000 BC until 2000 BC during which agriculture and farming developed.
Tumulus: general word for a large tumb built with piled up stones or earth. A tumulus can cover tumbs or dolmens . |
