| Paimpol
constitutes one of the principal cities of the Goëlo coast. And, like
the other ports of this coast, the cod-fishing towards Iceland made the
living of the city during many years. Moreover, the novel “pêcheurs
d’Islande” (fishermen of Iceland) of Pierre Loti takes place in the
port of Paimpol. |
Paimpol - Pan de bois Paimpol was one of the first sites on which the Bretons disembarked in the 6th century. This city lived in peace until the confrontations of the league. Paimpol takes the party of the future Henry 4 and undergoes the attacks of Fontenelle. It was seized twice by the English during the 16th century. It is Vauban which will build the fortifications around Paimpol as well as Bréhat. Similar to the neighbouring ports, the fishing boats leave little by little the place to the pleasure |
boats. The old city testifies of the former wealth brought by the port. Beautiful and old residences constitute a magnificent spectacle in the surroundings of the Martray square. This downtown stroll will give you the opportunity to visit the museum of the sea or the museum of the costume. Otherwise, within three kilometres from the city, you will be able to contemplate the abbey of Beauport. This domain is a 70 hectares classified site with more than three centuries of history. |
