| “Les
côtes d’Armor” (Armor coasts) were first called “Côtes du Nord” (North
Coasts), this second name was less attractive as far as the department
tourist image is concerned. Moreover, the term "ar mor" in Breton
dialect means "the sea". |
_ The population of the department is approximately 540 000 inhabitants (2003 statistics). _ The surface is of 6 878 kms2 (25% of the Brittany region). _ The length of the coasts extends to 350 kilometres. _ The department is divided into two areas, l’ar mor and l’argoat (country of wood). The forests occupy a surface of 70 000 hectares. _ The prefecture is Saint Brieuc (50 000 inhabitants) At the economic scale, “les côtes d’Armor” (the Armor coasts region) leaves a significant share to |
the primary sector with its agriculture dominated by pig and chicken livestock as well as wheat, corn and Artichokes cultures. The fishing activity is well represented with 30 000 registered boats. At the industrial scale, it is the agro-alimentary sector which dominates. The department counts on the NTIC to develop. At the national level, the department occupies the 10th position in terms of tourist flow which constitutes the main attribute of the economy. From the historical and cultural point of view, the department managed to preserve its history which remains completely authentic. |
