| The
patrimony of a city does not reside only in the old stones. Saint
Brieuc, is the illustration. Indeed, in the absence of a myriad of
monuments, Saint Brieuc is rich of a literary and spiritual history. |
Saint Brieuc - Intérieur First of all, the development of Saint Brieuc is related to the religion. The name of the city comes from a Welsh monk who with his disciples settled in the area at the end of the 5th centuries. Exactly at the site of the current fountain where he built a place of worship. Its tomb was the first treasure of the old city which accommodated numerous pilgrims. Another figure of the Christian hierarchy, the bishop Guillaume Pichon who defended the city at the beginning of the 13th century, |
was the first Breton saint to be canonized by Rome in 1234. Different era, different manners, between the 14th and the 15th century, during the confrontations between the Catholics and the Protestants, the city and its cathedral were devastated. The history of Saint Brieuc can be summarized to religion, fights for power with a spiritual background. This curious mixture will cradle writers’ vocations during the 19th and the 20th century such as Anatole Braz, Tristan Corbiere or Louis Guilloux for instance. |
