 Molène Island - Archipel
| Molène is an archipelago, a bunch of stones randomly spread. |
Molène Island - Bateaux In the past, the exploitation of the algae, collected on what remains the largest marine field of Europe and burned on the spot, was behind the nickname given to the island "Archipel des goémoniers ". Since 1988, both the archipelago of Molène and the Ouessant Island received the label of "Biosphere Reserve" given by the UNESCO. The Biosphere reserve of Iroise stands on 21 400 hectares under the limits of the Natural reserve of Armorique. Its goal is to preserve certain ecosystems |
which could be endangered and degraded by an overexploitation of the resources or the tourist over-frequentation during the estival periods. Forget your cars and bicycles once you reach Molène, the ideal is to walk: a hiking marked trail is available. Close to the unloading dock, the orientation table enables to locate the main islands of the archipelago: Lédénez, Balanec, Bannec and Triélen. After the impluvium, in the direction of semaphore is set up one of the three martyrdoms of the island. Then, in the vicinity of the church stands the polychrome war memorial. The memory of Drummond-Castle, English shipwrecked boat in June 1896, is present through a cistern of fresh water, a museum and the clock of the church. Do not miss the oldest house of the island (1648), the shelter of the lifeboat, the well of Saint Ronan as well as the mill of the monks. |
