| The
city having suffered heavy bombardments during the Second World War, it
keeps few vestiges of its past. Its strategic situation, its maritime
and military vocation attracted much covetousness. |
 History of Brest - Arsenal
Romans installed a strengthened camp on the site around the 2nd or 3rd
century. Between the 12th century and the 15th century, the city
reinforced its fortifications and passed successively in the hands of
the count of Leon, of the duke of Brittany, the English. During the
League war, Brest took the party of the king and Henry 4 thanked Brest
by giving it the title of city. However, the city will take its true
rise under Richelieu by becoming the main home-port of the Royal navy
and |
of the naval constructions. The two banks of Penfeld still
symbolize this strategic situation. During the Second World War, the
Germans make of Brest the base of theirs submarines. This is why the
city was 90% destroyed. Only the Saint Martin and la Recouvrance
districts were spared. |
