Dol de Bretagne is a city with a rich history and legends due to its localization between the coast and the steps of Brittany (marches de Bretagne).
Regarded
as one of the first cities of Brittany heading from Normandy, Dol de
Bretagne had to face many English assaults during its history. It was
besieged more than 14 times (including 3 unsuccessful attempts by
William the Conqueror). In addition, the first Breton king Nominoë made
of it his religious capital in 849 which guaranteed the independence of
the Breton Church until 1199. The testimony of this period conveys in
the Saint Samson cathedral, marvel of the Breton Gothic. Rebuilt and
extended following a fire caused by the troops of Jean sans Terre. Its
architecture is inspired from the Norman Gothic and the tomb of Thomas
James which represents the first monument of Renaissance Art in
Brittany. Today, the Cathedraloscope is the unique centre of cathedral
discovery where the mysteries of architecture, the construction stages
and the symbols are unveiled. The Mont-Dol: In the north of the city,
on the road of “Vivier sur Mer”, this granite dome culminates to 65
meters. Its has a very old history, an archaeologist from Rennes
brought to light mammoths bones, reindeers, lions, bears, elephants and
wolves dating from the Palaeolithic era. Pilgrimage places for druids,
this mount is the seat of many legends such as the fight between the
devil and Saint Michel. In the other side of the Dol, towards the
south, you will find the Menhir of the “champ Dolent”. Its shape and
its size (9,5m high) make of it one the most beautiful Breton Menhirs.
